Woodland Trust logo

The Woodland Trust

The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity championing native woods and trees. Established in 1972, the Trust has planted over 16 million trees with the help of 3.4 million people, and now owns more than 1,200 woods across the UK, all of which are freely open for everyone to enjoy.

The Trust’s work centres around one vision – to see a country rich in native woods and trees that is enjoyed and valued by everyone. To achieve this vision, it stands by three main aims: to enable the creation of more native woods and places rich in trees; to protect native woods, trees and their wildlife for the future; and to inspire everyone to enjoy and value woods and trees.

Sadly, the UK has only 13% woodland coverage, which is a long way behind the European average of 44%. The Trust's work of protecting ancient woodland, and creating new, not only provides stunning environments for the public to enjoy, but also helps to improve peoples’ health by getting them active outdoors to breathe fresh air and help reduce stress levels. In addition, woodland provides a host of additional environmental benefits such as protecting wildlife habitats, reducing flood risk, and helping combat climate change.
