Highland Spring trials 100% recycled plastic eco bottle

Highland Spring, the UK’s leading natural source water brand, has announced the trial of a 100% recycled* plastic eco bottle to help keep plastic in the circular economy and out of the oceans.

The trial will start in June with the launch of a 500ml Highland Spring eco bottle™ in selected Tesco stores in Scotland, followed by Sainsbury’s stores in England. The eco bottle will also be available at the Fever-Tree Tennis Championships at Queen’s Club.

The eco bottle label will feature a burst of green colour and a ‘100% recycled* plastic bottle’ message to differentiate it from other plastic bottles. Shoppers will be invited to give feedback on the launch online or in-store.

The results are set to help measure the public’s perception of recycled plastics and their reaction to a 100% recycled plastic water bottle. The insights will feed in to category-wide strategies to help eliminate plastic waste.

Highland Spring Chief Executive, Les Montgomery, said: “Our commitment to the environment starts with the UK’s leading brand, Highland Spring. That’s why we’ve announced the trial of a first-in-category eco bottle made from 100% recycled* plastic that’s 100% recyclable too.

“Plastic is a valuable resource that shouldn’t be treated as waste and we encourage everyone to get involved in this trial. Tell us what you think of the eco bottle and then recycle it afterwards to help keep the circle of recycled plastics going.

“This is a significant step that is part of a longer-term road map to eliminating plastic waste as more and more consumers recycle their plastic bottles and we can source recycled plastic in the quantities and quality we need.”

The launch is the first major milestone for Highland Spring since it overtook Evian to become the UK’s number one plain bottled water brand, with an impressive growth of 20.2% and volumes of 302 million litres in 2017 – 10 million litres ahead of Evian, according to the 2018 Bottled Water Report from food and drink experts, Zenith. Sales of plain bottled water in retail packs increased by 8% to over 3,100 million litres. Within this, still water grew by 8.7% and sparkling water grew by 5.1%.

Highland Spring Group, the UK’s leading producer of natural-source bottled water, remains the number one UK supplier with volumes of 552 million litres, representing growth of 12.6%. This takes the Group’s share of plain packaged bottled water to 17.5%, up from 16.8% in 2016.
